Windows Defender (Beta 2) - Initial and
Subsequent Scans
Once Windows Defender has been
installed and starts for the first time, the screen
shown below (Fig. 01) will appear.
 |
The first thing you want
to do is click the [Check for Updates]
button to get the latest definitions
installed. There is no point in running a
scan without the latest definitions.
|
| |
|
 |
As soon as the updates
have downloaded and installed the program
will go ahead and start the initial scan.
You don't get to select the type of scan for
this initial pass. You can see in the screen
capture below it's performing a Quick Scan.
The scan statistics are displayed in the
main window for the most recent scan. It
only took 53 seconds to scan 10567 objects
and there was no unwanted or harmful spyware
detected. |
| |
|
 |
Once the initial
definition update and scan has completed,
click [Home] in the toolbar and the scan
statistics will disappear. The last scan
date and type of scan performed are
displayed in the Status area of the main
Windows Defender interface. |
| |
|
 |
Other scan options are
available from the drop down Scan menu. Full
Scan obviously runs a scan on the entire
system or you can select [ Custom Scan... ]
to select specific drives or folders to be
scanned. |
| |
|
 |
Even though it doesn't
specifically say so in the previous screen,
selecting [ Custom Scan... ] also allows you
to set Quick or Full as the scanning
default. If you only want to scan selected
drivers or folders, click [ Select... ]
button and make your selections in the drive
list that appears. |
