Installing Windows 7

Installing Windows 7 seems like a rather simple undertaking. In fact, it actually is rather simple -- until you run into that one unexpected little glitch or screen that isn't supposed to be there asking a question you don't know how to answer to proceed with the installation. Sure, sometimes the process goes along smooth as silk, but other times it seems like a never ending adventure.
The reality is that in its simplest installation form few obstacles are encountered, but the majority of people installing Windows 7 aren't working with the simplest of scenarios. There are just too many variables to document each one that might be encountered, but I've put together a series of installation scenarios those contemplating a Windows 7 installation may find helpful. They are basically walkthroughs with a lot of screen captures that will hopefully give you some guidance and address some of the issues likely to be encountered.

Clean Installation - No Operating System Installed
Installation Scenario One
Very simple scenario. You have a computer with absolutely nothing on the hard drive and a full version Windows 7 DVD containing your version of choice. There is no data to be backed up. Granted, this doesn't happen very often, but it is a possibility so here's the procedure.

Clean Installation - Windows XP Installed
Installation Scenario Two
In this scenario the intent is to take a computer with some version of Windows XP installed and do a clean installation of Windows 7. There are actually two ways to go about the installation; booting from the Windows 7 DVD or starting the Windows 7 installation from inside the XP installation. The tutorial graphically compares the two different options.

Upgrade Installation - Windows XP Installed
Installation Scenario Three
You cannot perform an upgrade install directly from Windows XP to Windows 7. Yes, it was possible to upgrade directly from Windows XP to Windows Vista. Yes, it is possible to upgrade directly from Windows Vista to Windows 7, but you simply cannot upgrade directly from Windows XP to Windows 7. There is more information provided on the page if you find yourself in this situation.

Clean Installation - Windows Vista Installed
Installation Scenario Four
In this scenario the intent is to take a computer with some version of Windows Vista installed and do a clean installation of Windows 7. There are actually two ways to go about the installation; booting from the Windows 7 DVD or starting the Windows 7 installation from inside the Vista installation. The tutorial graphically compares the two different options.

Upgrade Installation - Windows Vista Installed
Installation Scenario Five
This scenario is just a simple, straightforward upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 . There's nothing tricky about it or any real hidden pitfalls that you should encounter along the way, as long as you've done your prep work and the current Vista system is in relatively good condition. That said, I feel compelled to go through my usual spiel about upgrades and the dangers that always exist relative to something going wrong, but it's only a paragraph or two that can easily be ignored.

Clean Installation to VMware Virtual Machine
Installation Scenario Six
This is simply a quick and easy tutorial for those unfamiliar with procedures for installing an operating system in a VMware virtual machine. It isn't intended to coerce you into switching over all your systems to virtual machines. As handy as they are, they aren't for everybody.

-  Important Information  -
The Elder Geek sites contain many articles and suggestions for modifying the Windows operating system. I've tried these tweaks and tips on many systems. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. The point is, ensure you have a current, tested backup of all system and data files and understand how to restore the system in case something goes very wrong. You can still yell at me, but I assume no responsibility for your actions and use of the information and disclaim any legal responsibility for any consequences of such actions.
