Create 'Shutdown
Computer with Timed Delay' Shortcut
|
| |
| 1 - Right
click on the desktop. Click [ New ] and [ Shortcut ]
option. |
 |
| 2 - Type [
shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f ] in the [ Type the
location of the item: ] input box. This sets the
shutdown to take place immediately when the shortcut
is clicked. Edit the '00' part of the code to
reflect the number of seconds delay that will take
place before shutdown in implemented. |
 |
| 3 - As you can see below, I've edited the '00'
to become '300' or a five minute delay before
shutdown begins. There is an upper limit to how long
a delay can be entered. If memory serves, I believe
it's somewhere around five to ten years (yes, years)
so you should be safe if you stick to a few minutes,
hours, days, or months. Click [ Next ] to proceed. |
 |
| 4 - Enter a
name for the new shortcut. It makes no difference
what name you assign as long as you pick something
you understand and it adequately conveys the
function. That said, I strongly suggest you include
the time delay in the name, especially if you have
more than one timed shutdown shortcut. They are
quite useful and you may well end up with quite a
few for different situations. Click [ Finish ] to
proceed. |
 |
| 5 - That's
all there is to the procedure. As far as the
shortcut being functional it's 100% ready to go. You
can leave it on the desktop, pin it to the start
menu, pin it to the taskbar, or dump it into any
folder you want. |
| 6 - When
the [ Shutdown - Five Minute Delay ] icon is clicked
a dialog box pops up to warn the user they are about
to be logged off the system. Depending on the time
delay there will also be an additional warning two
minutes before the system shuts down. Notice in the
screen capture below there is also a Cancel Shutdown
shortcut on the desktop. Because this is a 'timed'
shutdown, you need a way to essentially 'escape'
from the shutdown if you change your mind. If you do
create a timed shutdown shortcut I strongly suggest
you go to
Create Cancel Computer Shutdown Shortcut page
and create one to work in conjunction with timed
shutdowns. |

| Aesthetic Tweaking |
This has
nothing to do with the functioning of the shortcut,
but if you find the default icon for the shortcut
rather boring you can easily change it to something
else. Just right click the shortcut on the desktop,
click [ Properties ] to open the [Shutdown - Five
Minute Delay ] dialog box and click the [ Change
Icon ] button.
A message will appear saying
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe contains no icons.
Just click [ OK ] and the Change Icon dialog box
shown below will appear with hundreds of potential
icons to select. Pick one you like and click [ OK ]
button. Click [ OK ] in the [Shutdown - Five Minute
Delay ] dialog box and the change is complete. |

- Important Information -
The Elder Geek sites contain many articles and suggestions for
modifying the Windows operating system. I've tried these
tweaks and tips on many systems. Sometimes they work,
sometimes not. The point is, ensure you have a current,
tested backup of all system and data files and understand
how to restore the system in case something goes very wrong.
