Create Cancel
Computer Shutdown Shortcut
|
| |
| This shortcut is meant
to be used to cancel a timed shutdown in Windows 7.
A timed shutdown is different from simply clicking
shutdown on the start menu, which initiates the
shutdown immediately. Why would you want a timed
shutdown? There are many reasons. Maybe you've got a
process running you know will take 5 minutes to
complete, you want to shut down afterward, but you
don't want to wait at the computer for 15 minutes to
do a manual shutdown. If you change your mind, just
use the cancel shutdown shortcut and the system will
remain running. |
| |
| 1 - Right
click on the desktop. Click [ New ] and [ Shortcut ]
option. |
 |
| 2 - Type [
shutdown.exe -a ] in the location area, or you could
browse to where it's located. Click [ Next ] to
proceed. |
|
| 3 - Enter a
name for the new shortcut. It makes no difference
what name you assign as long as you pick something
you understand and it adequately conveys the
function. Click [ Finish ] to proceed. |
|
| 4 - That's
all there is to the procedure. As far as the
shortcut being functional it's 100% ready to go. You
can leave it on the desktop, pin it to the start
menu, pin it to the taskbar, or dump it into any
folder you want. As long as you don't have any kind
of time delayed restart or shutdown function set,
clicking the shortcut will have no effect on the
system. |
| |
| Aesthetic Tweaking |
This has
nothing to do with the functioning of the shortcut,
but if you find the default icon for the shortcut
rather boring you can easily change it to something
else. Just right click the shortcut on the desktop,
click [ Properties ] to open the [Cancel Shutdown
Properties ] dialog box and click the [ Change Icon
] button.
A message will appear saying
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe contains no icons.
Just click [ OK ] and the Change Icon dialog box
shown below will appear with hundreds of potential
icons to select. Pick one you like and click [ OK ]
button. Click [ OK ] in the [Cancel Shutdown
Properties ] dialog box and the change is complete. |

- Important Information -
The Elder Geek sites contain many articles and suggestions for
modifying the Windows operating system. I've tried these
tweaks and tips on many systems. Sometimes they work,
sometimes not. The point is, ensure you have a current,
tested backup of all system and data files and understand
how to restore the system in case something goes very wrong.
You can still yell at me, but I assume no responsibility for
your actions and use of the information and disclaim any
