Create Backup and
Restore Shortcut
|
| |
| 1 - Right
click on the desktop. Click [ New ] and [ Shortcut ]
option. |
 |
| 2 - Type [
C:\Windows\System32\sdclt.exe ] in the [ Type the
location of the item: ] input box. Click [ Next ] to
proceed. |
 |
| 3 - Enter a
name for the new shortcut. It makes no difference
what name you assign as long as you pick something
you understand and it adequately conveys the
function. Click [ Finish ] to proceed. |
 |
| 4 - That's
all there is to the procedure. As far as the
shortcut being functional it's 100% ready to go. You
can leave it on the desktop, pin it to the start
menu, pin it to the taskbar, or dump it into any
folder you want. |
| |
| Aesthetic Tweaking |
This has
nothing to do with the functioning of the shortcut,
but if you find the default icon for the shortcut
rather boring you can easily change it to something
else. Just right click the shortcut on the desktop,
click [ Properties ] to open the [ Backup and
Restore ] dialog box and click the [ Change Icon ]
button. What you see next depends on what you did in
item #2 in the tutorial.
If you followed it exactly and used [
C:\Windows\System32\sdclt.exe ] as the location of
the item, then you'll see the icons displayed in the
screen capture below, including the one for the
shortcut at the upper left of the desktop. If you
used a Class ID (CLSID) to create the shortcut
you're looking at a yellow file folder instead and
the [ Look for Icons In This File: ] is displaying
the C:\Windows\explorer.exe path location. If you
don't like any of the choices in the two default
locations, use the [ Browse... ] button and navigate
to C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll to see if there's
anything there that strikes your fancy, but in this
case the most suitable icons are located in the [
C:\Windows\System32\sdclt.exe ] location.
Pick one and click [ OK ] button. Click [ OK ] in
the [ Backup and Restore Properties ] dialog box and
the change is complete. |

- Important Information -
The Elder Geek sites contain many articles and suggestions for
modifying the Windows operating system. I've tried these
tweaks and tips on many systems. Sometimes they work,
sometimes not. The point is, ensure you have a current,
tested backup of all system and data files and understand
how to restore the system in case something goes very wrong.
You can still yell at me, but I assume no responsibility for
your actions and use of the information and disclaim any
