Microsoft Windows Update Site Unavailable
There has been no
official confirmation from Microsoft that an update initiated by the
Redmond, WA company has left many XP users unable to access the
Windows Update site. However, a number of readers have reported a
"fix" that support technicians have been using to solve the access
trouble that seems to be effecting primarily corporate network and
broadband users. When trying to access Windows Update the following
error message is returned.
"Thank you for
your interest in Windows Update.
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you
get the most out of your computer.
The latest version of Windows Update is only available on
computers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP. "
The steps technicians are currently
taking to resolve the issue are listed below. Complete the steps
listed. Do not eliminate or skip any steps.
Clear out temporary storage
locations.
- Click on Start, then Control
Panel. Double-click on Internet Options
- On the General tab, in the
Temporary Internet Files section, click on
Delete Files. Check the box to 'Delete all Offline Content'
and click OK.
- Close the Internet Options
window.
Clear Windows Update folder.
- Click on Start, then My
Computer. (Or on Windows 2000 machines, just open the desktop
icon)
- Open the C drive
- Open the Program Files folder
- Open the WindowsUpdate folder
- Delete everything you find in
this folder, including subfolders.
- Close this window
Check WUTemp folder.
- Click on Start, then My
Computer
- Open the C drive
- Delete the WUTemp folder and
all of its contents.
Remove current control files on
machine.
- Click on Start, then Run.
- Type in 'regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u'
(without the quotes) and click OK.
- You should get a successful
message, click OK on that as well.
- Click on Start, then Search,
then choose All Files and Folders.
- Click on Advanced Options, and
check the first three boxes listed there.
- Type in the file name IUCTL.DLL
and click Search Now. Delete every copy of this file that you
find.
- Run the search again for the
file IUENGINE.DLL. Delete every copy of this file you find.
Try accessing the
Windows Update Site again.
