Dependencies None
Real World Description See the Microsoft Description above.
Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Automatic

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

If you choose to update manually this service is not needed. Personally, I manually run update every morning so I have this service disabled. It's been my experience that Automatic Update has missed an occasional update as well as delaying the time from when the update was released to when Automatic Update states it's available. Your experience may vary.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service

Service Name BITS Process Name svchost.exe -k netsvcs
Default Settings XP Home   : Automatic XP Pro   : Automatic
    XP Pro w/SP2  : Manual
Microsoft Service Description Transfers files in the background using idle network bandwidth. If the service is stopped, features such as Windows Update, and MSN Explorer will be unable to automatically download programs and other information. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it may fail to transfer files if they do not have a fail safe mechanism to transfer files directly through IE in case BITS has been disabled.
Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Real World Description In theory this should be a useful service, especially since it can continue an interrupted download due to a logoff or shutdown situation. Unfortunately, it can also be prone to trouble when the resumption occurs. See the KB article listed in Notes section.
Is this service needed?

No

Recommended Setting:

Manual

Note
Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

Update Available for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (Only for pre-SP2 systems)

No

Recommended Setting:

Disabled

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

COM+ Event System Service

Service Name EventSystem Process Name svchost.exe
Default Settings XP Home   : Manual XP Pro   : Manual

Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Real World Description One of the support files that you'll probably never have any use for, but if you disable it, the warning notices you receive are worse than leaving it enabled.
Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Manual

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

*See System Event Notification Service

COM+ System Application Service

Service Name COMSysApp Process Name dllhost.exe
Default Settings XP Home   : Manual XP Pro: Manual
Microsoft Service Description Manages the configuration and tracking of Component Object Model (COM)+-based components. If the service is stopped, most COM+-based components will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Real World Description Basically, this is the application that controls COM+ Event System. One of the support files that you'll probably never have any use for, but if you disable it, the warning notices you receive are worse than leaving it enabled. Disabling this service will generate Event Log entries noting it isn't running. An annoyance, but not harmful.
Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Manual

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

The Manual setting avoids the Event Log entries.
*See COM+ Event System
*See System Event Notification Service

Cryptographic Services Service

Service Name CryptSvc Process Name svchost.exe -k netsvcs
Default Settings XP Home   : Automatic XP Pro   : Automatic
Microsoft Service Description Provides three management services: Catalog Database Service, which confirms the signatures of Windows files; Protected Root Service, which adds and removes Trusted Root Certification Authority certificates from this computer; and Key Service, which helps enroll this computer for certificates. If this service is stopped, these management services will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Real World Description Provides the annoying boxes that pop up telling you a driver you are about to install isn't digitally signed. If you disable this service you'll be flooded with uncertified driver notifications.
Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

I set this to Manual and if it's needed it starts. If you get errors or repeated calls for the service, set it to Automatic. A lot depends on how many unsigned drivers are on your system and of what type drivers.

DHCP Client Service

Service Name Dhcp Process Name svchost.exe -k netsvcs
Default Settings XP Home   : Automatic XP Pro   : Automatic
Microsoft Service Description Manages network configuration by registering and updating IP addresses and DNS names.
Dependencies AFD Networking Support Environment NetBios over Tcpip
Dependencies TCP/IP Protocol Driver IPSEC driver
Real World Description This is how your computer gets a Dynamic IP address so you can connect to the internet. If Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, you need DHCP Client. Also required for most DSL/Cable connections.
Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Automatic

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

Not needed if you have a static IP address (very few home users have static IP addresses) or if it's a stand alone computer.

Distributed Link Tracking Client Service

Service Name TrkWks Process Name svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Microsoft Service Description Maintains links between NTFS files within a computer or across computers in a network domain.
Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Real World Description For those that are part of a domain -and- use NTFS it has some value in keeping links across machines up to date, especially in the case of databases updated via the network.
Is this service needed?

   Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Manual

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

10/17/2002 - I originally listed this service as not needed and recommended it be disabled. If you are using the FAT32 file system that advice still applies. However, as more and more users gravitate to NTFS and judging from the number of readers that have written, I've changed this to a Possibly needed service and suggest it be set to Manual.

Distributed Transaction Coordinator Service

Service Name MSDTC Process Name msdtc.exe
Default Settings XP Home   : Manual XP Pro   : Manual
Microsoft Service Description Coordinates transactions that span multiple resource managers, such as databases, message queues, and file systems. If this service is stopped, these transactions will not occur. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Security Accounts Manager
Real World Description Closely related to Distributed Link Tracking Client discussed previously. Really serves no purpose for home user systems.

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

DNS Client Service

Service Name Dnscache Process Name svchost.exe -k NetworkService
Default Settings XP Home   : Automatic XP Pro   : Automatic

If this service is stopped, this computer will not be able to resolve DNS names and locate Active Directory domain controllers. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Dependencies TCP/IP Protocol Driver
Real World Description As the description above states, it caches Domain Name System (DNS) names for this computer. If disabled, it simply means the system will go upstream to resolve DNS names rather than use the cache.
Is this service needed?

No

Recommended Setting:

Disabled

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

Start this service if you receive a 'DNS Resolver Failed To Flush The Cache' message.

Error Reporting Service

Service Name ERSvc Process Name svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Real World Description This is responsible for the box that pops up wanting you to report an application error or system crash to Microsoft.

Microsoft Service Description Enables event log messages issued by Windows-based programs and components to be viewed in Event Viewer. This service cannot be stopped.

Is this service needed?

No

Recommended Setting:

Manual

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

Help and Support Service

Service Name helpsvc Process Name svchost.exe
Default Settings XP Home   : Automatic XP Pro   : Automatic
Microsoft Service Description Enables Help and Support Center to run on this computer. If this service is stopped, Help and Support Center will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Real World Description This connects to the online help via Microsoft available from the Help and Support option on the Start Menu.
Is this service needed?

No

Recommended Setting:

Automatic

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

This XP feature has received a lot of bad press, but it can be quite useful. It may not be everybody's cup of tea, but it can provide a lot of good info or quick pointers to info on the Microsoft site. In spite of the "No" above for service needed, I'd still set it to Automatic.

Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Manual

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

Yes, you -do- have to have a CD burner installed or else this is useless. It -does not- turn a standard CD Drive into a CD-R or CD-RW.

Indexing Service

Service Name cisvc Process Name cisvc.exe
Default Settings XP Home   : Manual XP Pro   : Manual
Microsoft Service Description Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers; provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language.
Dependencies Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Real World Description What Microsoft said above. What they don't say is that this service tends to run amok, indexing far more than necessary and starting without warning. For the benefit it provides, the resource usage is far from an equal tradeoff. However, in all fairness, if you have a reasonably powered machine you might as well leave Indexing Service on. It can speed things up a bit and most of the systems capable of running XP efficiently shouldn't be bogged down by having this service running. If it does take a noticeable performance hit it's really time to consider upgrading.
Is this service needed?

Possibly

Recommended Setting:

Manual

Note Updated to reflect SP2 changes.

Before disabling, uninstall this via the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet.

The following is a direct quote from Microsoft.

"There have been claims in various published technical articles and newsgroup postings that Windows XP always reserves 20 percent of the available bandwidth for QoS. These claims are incorrect. The information in the "Clarification about QoS in End Computers That Are Running Windows XP" section of this article correctly describes the behavior of Windows XP systems."

I'd suggest you read the entire Knowledge Base article Q316666 and decide for yourself whether you think this is needed.

1/26/2004 - I've received a number of e-mails from readers saying I should reconsider the "Absolutely Not" rating I originally posted for this service. The 1/26/2004 from Patrick, shown below, is typical of the ones I've received, so for the time being I'm changing the recommendation to "Possibly" and will continue to monitor the e-mail for additional responses on whether it should be downgraded again.

06/29/2005 - I have once again changed the Recommended Setting to Disabled and suggest you scroll down and read the notes sent in by TEG site visitors. I'm going to leave the "Possibly" in place rather than change it to an "Absolutely Not" scenario, but in 99% of the situations most are likely to encounter, the dangers of having it enabled far outweigh the benefits.

Whether or not this service is needed or not is a tough call. For an experienced user that constantly monitors firewall and anti-virus programs by an alternate method, the answer is not needed. For others, I'd suggest leaving it on Automatic. It does provide visual feedback and the little balloons in the Notification Area are hard to ignore, which is good for those lax on security.

- Reminder -
For many months now I've been posting a reminder about 'Patch Tuesday' or 'Second Tuesday' as it has come to be known when Microsoft releases the latest round of updates for Windows XP and other products.

If you're using a Microsoft operating system (and it's likely you are or you wouldn't be on this site) it's once again time to head for Windows Update for the latest round of Critical and Security updates.

As always, I strongly suggest you read about any update prior to installation, especially updates carrying a less than 'Critical' rating, and have a current system and data backup available in case it's necessary to restore the system to a pre-patch condition.

Important Information
The Elder Geek sites contain many articles and suggestions for modifying the Windows operating system. I've tried these tweaks and tips on many systems. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. The point is, ensure you have a current, tested backup of all system and data files and understand how to restore the system in case something goes very wrong. You can still yell at me, but I assume no responsibility for your actions and use of the information and disclaim any legal responsibility for any consequences of such actions.
