Image Dimensions Not
Available in Windows Explorer Details View
I
received this information from Laszlo and wanted to pass it along so other TEG site visitors
could benefit. First I'll present Laszlo's e-mail exactly as
I received it and then add some screen captures and
comments.
I recommend
posting the following soltution under your windows
explorer solutions (http://www.theeldergeek.com/w.htm):
"Dimensions of images not shown in
details view, even though dimensions column is shown"
Solution: use regedit to
add/change the following value:
Value: PerceivedType
String Data: image
to all of your .jpg, .gif, .tif
etc. keys under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Some software (Photoshop) may
change this key, in which case in the details view of
windows explorer, even though you select "Dimensions" as
one of the columns to display, nothing is displayed in
that column.
Restore the above registry setting
and presto! Your dimensions are displayed again.
I've searched around for hours on
the internet for a solution, but couldn't find one, so I
fixed it myself and now offer you the solution!

As much time as users spend
in Windows Explorer opening, creating, moving and copying
files and folders, if you look at the right side of Windows
Explorer I'm almost willing to bet you'll only see four
columns and column headings; Name, Size, Type, and Date
Modified. They are the columns that appear by default and
the majority of users never take the time to add any
additional columns. This tip applies to the Dimensions
column that has been added to the My Pictures folder shown
below in the screen capture. If you'd like to see what other
column details are available, on the Explorer menu select
View > Choose Details... and the Choose Details window
will open. In this case there are 37 items that could be
selected for viewing.

Referring back to the e-mail
above, if the dimensions shown above were missing, a simple
registry edit can solve the problem. Go to Start > Run and
type "regedit" without the quotes in the Open: line and
click OK to launch registry editor as shown below. After
navigating to the appropriate registry key, in this case
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif, insure that the PerceivedType string
value is present and the Data field is set to image.

Repeat the above procedure
for any graphics extension where the size information is
missing from the Dimensions column. Once all the changes
have been made, close Registry Editor and you should be
ready to go with no more missing dimensions.
