Need a little help from my friends.... I am running WinXP SP2 and my add/remove program list is fouled up. I first see a list of about 10 programs and then there is a very, very large space before the next program appears. I would say that the area that I have to scroll down to see the remainder of the list could almost list 500 entries. It is white, but if I click in that area it turns blue like it contains a program to delete. It does not contain any information, nor can I delete it. Any suggestions? Thanks

Ok, i left this one hoping someone else could give you the answer. But it looks like its down to me again.

uninstall infomation is kept by XP in this registry key. When add and remove is run in control panel XP uses this key to build the list. So you should have some bad entries under this key producing blanks. Carefull checking through would confirm this.

the key is here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\

LOL canoneman you sure are a hoot. I was surfing for something a little more in depth on this issue. I had noticed a script that someone created to resolve this issue at one time but have forgotten where it is and\or how it worked. The following is Microsofts solution for this. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;266668
one quick fix seems to be this: go>start\run and type in cmd and hit enter. Now type in the following REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL
and hit enter on your keyboard. This should reset those registry entries.

i have been here way to long to search for the answers all the time. its no fun, i like to have my own guess and see if i am right, it has its dangers and i am sure to get a few wrong, but its fun. I notice on this occassion with the info you have provided from MS that i am once again correct in my post which makes me pleased. P.S. I used regmon to find the key i posted.

I notice the main solution on the MS page ends with Repair Install. i use to go for that almost straight away, but it messes upa few settings so its last on the list these days

I had this problem myself with AUTOCAD 2002 installed , but at the same time I had CoolWebSearch trojan on machine. After reinstalling windows , I don't have anymore trojan , autocad and that problem , so I don't know what was causing it.

I like to take a stab at it myself as well. More often than not, like you, I'm correct but some people still insist on the "Microsoft" cure so I try to give them additional resources as well. I hope in this way they can learn and not have to ask again and again. I also find that in searching for articles to the problem and their solutions I may in fact learn something I didn't know and or refresh my memory about things I have come to take for granted. I guess I'm an old search hound and I love to surf for solutions as well as giving my own. Unless of course they are so ridiculously simple like the "how do I maximise web pages that I load from a URL" or some such very similiar question. LOL LOL. I noticed your "most often asked" jibe. lol lol. very very true. Right up there with opening multiple instances of IE. Cheers.

Thanks.... I think that it is AutoCad Lite on my machine that is the cause of the problem... Will try the MS fix first...

Well I looked at the MS soultion and it did not seem to do what I wanted, so I tried the: "go>start\run and type in cmd and hit enter. Now type in the following REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL
and hit enter on your keyboard. This should reset those registry entries". That did not work. Still the same old problem as I explained in the first post. I then went into the registry at: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\" and did a "find" for the value "autodesk". Found a folder (with a alpha/numeric name) that had keys that refered to Autocad Lite 2002. Deleted that folder and rebooted. Fixed the problem and it even displays AutoCad Lite 2002 in add/remove progams now. This was truly magic as when I now go back and serch the registry, I can not fine an entry under the:"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\" Directory. But it did fix the problem.

Great to hear it appears to be working now.

Good job, but that entry in add/remove is probably invalid now, try to uninstall it and instead of "Are you shure that you want to uninstall..." you may get "Window cannot find...". You shuld first backup that key (but maybe later you can reinstal autocad and than uninstall) , blah , blah ,blah ....

Niksha...You are right on. Autocad lite appears in the Add/Remove program list but it does not give me the "Remove" dialog box. But at least I can see all of the other entries now...
