My IDE 1 (Primary channel) is not working,I am using IDE 2 to get the system usable. The problem is that Device manager is telling me that this device is working properly, when it is not! I've had this problem with device manager on several systems, when a device is definately not working, the computer thinks it is. ''Puzzled''

Have you shut down your computer, opened the case, disconnected and reconnected the IDE primary hard drive connectors? Just a thought?
Sometimes these connections can wiggle themselves lose with vibrations or moving about of the computer tower.

Could be a fault with the wiring on the board.
All computers are capable of computational flying, some are slow, and some are fast. But they all crash the same way, BSOD - Broken Streaks Of Debris.

It's quite simple to fit a square peg into a round hole, use a triangle with an attached cylinder for forceful translation.

Disable IDE 1 in the Bios and Device Manager won't show it any more.

EDIT : This is a rare fault, have you checked cables are pushed fully into sockets, no bent pins etc. ?

hmmn....confused...so you have cables over to ide2 (secondary ide channel) and it boots. How you are physically booting will help me understand. Not the first time in my life where I lost the primary channel and had to use the secondary channel as my boot.

Reading all your threads you are having multiblle problems. Stop for a minute and breathe. One problem may lead to another
Go Device Manager and delete all your IDE channels, not rebooting till last is uninstalled, ignoring pop-ups to reboot till last is uninstalled, then reboot. XP will reinstall all IDE Channels, then reboot one more time.
You have had so many problems, your XP may be corrupted by now and need a Clean Install ;)

Hi again Smokey, there's no problem booting from the secondary IDE,I've got HDD & one dvd rom drive connected to it,an it works fine.I think I will remove the mobo, and check the soldering, before I do anything else,if the connections to the IDE socket are faulty, then device manager would still think it's ok.

I have actually had this happen to me...go thru regular trouble shooting...pull out what you need to test...stick in a drive and test...what more can be said. You know your drive is good so just test the channel.
