Hi,
I have a part wired, part wireless network via a Dynamode 802.11g Mimo broadband router. The laptops experience dropouts as soon as the pc connects. Any ideas?

Thanks for responding.

The desktop pc is connected directly via ethernet. Up to five laptops may also connect wirelessly, though rarely all at once. By 'dropping out' I mean they lose internet connection and have difficulty reconnecting as soon as the desktop pc is connected. If a laptop does get on it is often also unable to open certain websites. They work perfectly normally when the desktop is off.

The OS is XP Pro and the firewall is Outpost Security Suite Pro

I would suggest posting a hijack log of your desktop just to be on the safe side to begin with.

Can you check that you don't have the "internet connection sharing" option enabled on the desktop?

Ok. Will do. I am pretty certain it doesn't though. I will look when I get home from work tonight.

As you were. It would seem that internet connection sharing WAS enabled on the desktop, which explains a lot. I am unable to access the properties of the network connection though as I'm getting the "An unexpected error occurred" message. The workaround, reregistering the netshell.dll and ole32.dll, does not fix it. I have however stopped ICS from the command line. After a lot of other tinkering, the laptops' internet connection now seems to be functioning properly but they are having difficulty finding the pop server to send and receive email. The settings are correct and email still works fine on the desktop pc.

Any more excellent ideas? I've run out...

Are all 3 pcs XP with the same firewall?
What email client are you trying to configure?
Settings should include:
-email address and password
-pop server address, smtp server address, ports for both
-depending on your provider check marks or not for: ssl encryption on pop and/or SSL, checkmark by server requires authentication, log on using secure authentication and/or my server requires authentication (the 2 are not the same!) and for the later credentials for authentication (usually "use same as for pop")
-finally check mark by "include this email when receiving/sending" and remember password for the authentication parts

Check that the firewall is not blocking the email clients.
When all else fails try to increase the delay for connection timeout.

trying setting up your email client on a laptop so it goes to the fully qualified name of the pop 3 server. For example, instead of just putting in shawmail for incoming and outgoing server, I use shawmail.cg.shawcable.net. You can find the full address of the server by checking with your isp.
