I have a Toshiba Laptop A135-S4427. Reformated the Laptop and tried to install Windows XP only to find that TOSHIBA in their infinite wisdom did not provide drivers for Xp. They only support VISTA which I do not want and it has tons of problems.

Where can I go to find Drivers for this laptop? HELP.

You didn't say what series your laptop is - so it's hard to search for any drivers, but the link for downloads is

<a href="http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK" target="_blank">http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi....jsp?service=UK</a>

If you have no luck there, suggest you contact Toshiba support for advice.

(Toshiba notebooks are grouped by "family" such as Satellite, Satellite Pro, Tecra, Equium etc. And then model name or number.)

If computers are so great, why do they still need us to plug them in?

Have you contacted Toshiba's Support and asked them?
Your other option is to identify your hardware and then search for specific drivers that way.

Before we go much further, what was the original OS installed on this notebook ? Vista ? What version of XP are you trying to install now ? What install method (and source) are you using ?

If Vista was the pre-installed OS, you most likely have a recovery partition and drivers that are suited only for Vista, and installing XP over the C: partition may cause conflicts of the type you are having. Remember; OEM systems have OEM operating system versions that cannot be overridden with another version. You're bordering on a pirate version install.

Otherwise, if you are doing a legitimate, clean install of XP (going through normal activation), drivers should be picked up by the OS. The PC manufacturer does not decide what drivers are required, but do have their prerequisites before updating to XP SP2. The service pack checklist link below will confirm part of this.

My computer is a Satellite A135-S4427

The original operating system installed on it by Toshiba was VISTA. There are no XP drivers on the disc that was supplied by Toshiba with my computer. Toshiba has been no help at this point with XP drivers. By not having XP drivers Toshiba is mandating that you have to use VISTA.

What I tried to install was XP Professional

It is my computer and I should be able to install any operating system I want on my computer.

I've spent some time searching the net about this one this morning - everything I read confrims that this laptop was built specifically for Vista and there is no XP support for it. Everywhere it is for sale confirms it is for Vista. Various Toshiba support sites confirm that XP drivers for it just don't exist. Unlike desktop pc's that you can build yourself, laptops are sold with the OS integral.

As I see it IMO, you have 3 options:-

1. Put up with Vista.
2. Find out what the hardware is in the laptop and see what drivers you can find from the manufacturer websites (such as realtec) - no guarantee that they will work with the laptop.
3. Ditch it or sell it.

When purchasing, need to investigate first and see what all is offered for it. I went thru the same as Sparrow looking, at Toshiba site type in Downgrade, and you will find there is support to downgrade to XP, but this is only offered for Business's, So you may be stuck with Vista. Contact the place you purchased from, if they offer no help, I don't know. ;)

Thanks Butch - forgot about:-

Option 4 - XP downgrade/upgrade ;)

At the very least, MS will know they've got yet another unsatisfied customer (not that they probably give a toss)

Have browse to the Toshiba site, not even having a xp driver, maybe you need to search the driver for the specific pieces of hardware, but here is a simple method might help.

Download driver packs from here http://driverpacks.net/DriverPacks/ unzip it then on device manager, right click those yellow exclamation mark hardware, choose update driver then point it to the root of the extracted driver pack, it will find the correct driver by itself.

It is my computer and I should be able to install any operating system I want on my computer.
Not when it involves an OEM system, unless you are willing to void any hardware warranty and circumvent the EULA for Vista.

Did you go out and actually pay for XP Pro ?

Use all the drivers from the A105 S4094
they all work perfectly for the S4427

 The drivers from the A105 S4094 worked perfectly with the exception of the Ethernet. I connected via the wireless and ran Windows Update. That picked up the Realtek Ethernet chip & installed the Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller. driver. Laptop is perfect and sooooo much faster without Vista. Thank you, Thank you - I now have a decent laptop!
