Dear All,

I hope someone can help me here ! I onw a Toshiba laptop Satelite M30X-130 running XP Home SP2. All of a sudden my sound died. I have tried many tings to get it back alive but nothing works. The computer is equipped with an onboard soundcard from Realtek. In the device manager the soundcard is present and according to the system it is working properly. If I want to set a sound mixer or any other input device, the choises are greyed out. Also the volume control disappeared from my bar.
When I look in the Windows Audio section in Everest, there is nothing. When I look in running services, the windows audio service is running. When I look in the device manager under properties of the mixer, it tells me that the deiver is loaded but on switched on.
I tried many times to remove and reinstall the latest Realtek driver (AC 97) but without any success.
Any one please help, I do not know what to do, also I do not know what caused this problem, I did not install any new programs or devices, the sound has just gone.....

Regards,
Floor.

remove the old sound driver and reboot the notebook, download this driver, enter your notebook info and use M30X dont worry about the -130
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi....jsp?service=UK
turn off antivirus and antispy apps and install the driver.reboot.

Hi Travelingman,

I have tried your suggestion many times but unfortunately it doesn't work. Yesterday I found out that I have a bad PnP enumerator (yellow exclamation), which can well be the cause of my sound problem. I have reinstalled this a couple of times but without any luck. Do I need to uninstall several devices before reinstalling the PnP enumerator ? Do you have any experience with this ?

Floor.

This seems to be the fix for the pnp enumerator.
copy machine.inf from %windir%\inf to a temp dir
remove line 20: ExcludeFromSelect=*

add new hardware have disk (select the temp dir with the modified machine.inf) and
install the plug and play software enumerator

swenum.sys is found in system32\drivers
streamci.dll is found in system32
or they can be found on your windows disk.

The sound driver should be picked up after following this procedure.

Unfortunately this is not the case. The yellow exclamation mark stays with the pnp enumerator. Do I need to do anything else before I reinstall the pnp enumerator ? Deinstall some devices ? Am I missing files that are needed by swenum.sys ? I took the files from another system with a working pnp enumerator. If you have any ideas at all, please tell me, I am completely lost here.

I have found the solution! On another forum I have found the following procedure:

Hi to all! This message goes out to all of you who hadn't the luck to get their sound back to life with the given solutions in this thread: I followed all steps, but still my "PnP software enumerator" (or in german "PnP Softwaregeräte Enumerator") told me that he couldn't load the needed drivers. Consequently I had still no sound. I also made a windows repair install, but the problem was still there. After hundreds of trial & errors I finally came to a solution for WIN XP!:
1.) Deinstall your sound drivers. Save streamci.dll and swenum.sys and machine.inf to a temp folder as mentioned above.
2.) Deinstall your failing "PnP software enumerator".
3.) Go into the registry via regedit or the editor of your choice. In there close all keys so you just see "my work", "workplace" or whatever the englisch name for the german "Arbeitsplatz" is (it has a little computer symbol next to its name, I guess you know what I mean.)
4.) Then search for "swenum". Delete every key that you find. Before you do so I highly recommend to create a system restore point or a backup of your registry, just in case something goes wrong. You have to delete the whole key, not just the line with "swenum" in it. For example: You'll find the word "swenum" in a key where you can also find "pnp software enumerator" and some other entries. Again :You have to delete the whole key. On the left side you see an open folder in which you are in right now, deleteing this folder means to delete the whole key. Do so, it the quickest and easiest way. If there comes a warning that you don't have the permission to do so, right click the folder and give yourself the permissions to delete the folder ;-) Do this for all keys where you find the "swenum" in it. You should find about 5-10 keys.
5.) After you finished close the editor and reopen it again. Research the registry to make sure their is no more swenum entry.
6.) Restart, then check your registry again. Just for the case Win XP has reinstalled something. If you find another "swenum" entry delete it. Do also search for "PnP software enumerator". If you have done right before you shouldn't find anything. If you do anyway, delete the whole key again.
7.) Go to "windows/system32/drivers" and delete swenum.sys. Also go to "windows/system32" and delete the file streamci.dll (don't do that if you have forgotton to follow step1 of my description!)
8.) Now reinstall your "PnP software enumerator" following the steps mentioned in the posts above. (In the hardware manager click "have disk" and choose your temp folder and the inf file in there, choose "PnP software enumerator" under standard devices or something like that).
9.) If you have done right you should have the "PnP software enumerator" back without showing any errors. If you have done right Win XP shouldn't ask you to restart. Now install your sound drivers, restart and be happy again. I hope this solution did the trick for those who didn't find the posts above solving their problems. Maybe some steps can be left out, but I recommend to follow all of them, because I'm not sure where the errors is hiding exactly.

This works perfectly. Thanks for help.

While it may not work on all systems, it could answer a few recent threads that have dealing with the same issue of "no sound at all"...

Here's a perfect example of a solved thread that should be marked accordingly by putting the (S) in the topic title ! :) (As he prays to the Gods at TEG...)

Thanks for your reply and the solution !

I am very much hoping someone is still reading this. I have been trying this fix, but each time I delete the swenum or streamci files they instantly reappear! I've tried copying files from another copy of XP over them, but it never works. The file stays as the original version. This means I keep getting the Error 39 over and over again. If anyone knows how to kill these files once and for all so I can replace them with working ones, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Ok this tells you his problem and yours aren't the same, you would have better luck starting a new topic, It will get more views and responses, you may be asked questions about your problem, PC, these will get you a personalized response and hopefully a fix. Maybe a mod will see this and make it a new topic for you, this way responses and suggestions for your needed fix and his won't get mixed up and confused. Always better this way to have your own topic/thread for problems even when they look the same may/probably are not. ;)
Good luck and someone will help.

It may help to try these suggestions here in safe mode as only a minimum of programs are running, In normal mode a running program may be using or trying to use one of these files so windows won't let you make no changes to them or get rid of them

hey, I guess I am one of the countless who face this audio problem... I 've been reading about how one possible solution requires saving machine.inf (minus line 20), streamci.dll and swenum.sys to an alternate location and something to the effect of removing the "corrupted plug and play enumerator" and somehow reinstalling it after also removing swenum from the registry (<---another thing I am confused about).

My problem is that I can't even attempt to do this because my computer won't let me copy or move swenum from its location on my C drive (a problem defined as "cyclic renduncancy check")... I am also unsure which one I need, the one in system32\drivers or another in I386\DRIVER.CAB?

1. The main thing is this... I have heard people talking about sending the swenum.sys to each other and was wondering if even could do this for me. If anyone can help, my e-mail is... metalmasterdisfigure@yahoo.com... Thank you......

I had this problem, but I found a much simpler way to fix it. Apparently there is a conflict between the XP sound drivers and the sound card sound drivers. The way I fixed it was:

1.) boot up in safe mode
2.) Go to device manager>Sound, video, and game controllers
3.) delete everything in that category, such that the category disappears when you're done.
4.) reboot normally
5.) windows should say it found new hardware
6.) let windows install the new hardware.

Maybe I was just lucky, but this worked for me.
