I am trying to install a Canon Canoscan 8400F. I followed the instructions given by Canon (several times); installation the software first then hooking up the scanner. I keep getting the "Found New Hardware Wizard", which keeps stating:

"An error occurred during the installation of the device
The required section was not found in the INF"

It installs on XPHome fine. XP Home and XP Pro are on the same computer and different partitons. I was told by Canon that there was a computer problem. It was scanned for virus (2 programs), spyware (4 programs) and chkdsk (Recovery console). The computer is fine. Even using Omnipage, the driver cannot be found. It must be installed somewhere (Is there a manual way to install it in the correct folder?

I assume it uses a USB connection. Perhaps you connected the scanner before you installed the software. That wont work. The software needs to be connected first.
Any computer problem can be fixed with a big enough hammer.

If this persists I think you will have to contact canon tech support. perhaps you can download an updated driver.

With your scanner connected you might also first look at: Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager
(Alternately: Start / Run / devmgmt.msc )

Look through the device manager for your scanner. IF it's there it's probably going to have a yellow exclaimation point by it. If you find the scanner entry, you can right-click it and select "uninstall" from the popup menu. Reboot your computer with the scanner not plugged into the computer. Reinstall the scanner software, Reboot again. After restarting the computer and it's all settled in and ready to work, you can plug in your scanner and see if it functions properly now.

If you don't seen your scanner in device manager, don't worry about it for now. Try looking at cannon support.

Regards,
Brian

Thanx for the replies; however, I downloaded all new files and driver. Removed driver, whereever it was and reinstalled all - no change. Canon does not know why and insists it must be something with my computer. The computer checks out fine.

I had the same problem. Canon tech sent me a patch that fixed the problem.

The patch is call imagedevicekey
I tried to upload it to you but it was blocked because I guess because it is a registry file.

I run windows 2000 pro. Scanner works fine now.

i have the same scanner and downloaded the software hooked it up to the computer and had no problems and the scanner is performing fine.
I never even had to contact Canon.
I run windows xp home edition and have a Canon PIXMA 5000 printer that i use with the scanner.
I hope that you get it working, I also have a Canon Canoscan LIDE 80 Scanner which I downloaded the software for on another notebook and it is working fine as well and I use it with the PIXM 5000 printer.

Regards, and good luck!! Canon tech support is great in my past experience, although I have not had to use them lately.

Make sure the scanner is on then plug it into the USB port when the software asks for it. I had a problem similar with an HP psc 1350. Give it a shot.

It’s also possible that you are missing a required .dll file; try using the System File Checker.

Start/Run and type “sfc /scannow” without the quotes. It may ask you for the Windows CD. It doesn’t give you a report of errors, just closes when it’s finished. Restart the computer for the changes to take affect and see if it works then.

I am having exactly the same problem. I have a dual-booting desktop that boots WIN2K from partition "I:" and a laptop that boots from "C:". The 8400F installs smoothly on the laptop, but I get the infamous "The required section was not found in the INF" error during the device HW phase of the installation on my desktop PC. The installation procedure is apparently making an erroneous assumption about drive "C:".

I had a somewhat heated exchange with the Canon customer support guy who insisted that their installation procedure was correct because most PCs boot from "C:" so they were justified in looking for any files there. I have about 6 other devices and 50 applications, but all of these expect to find their files in the installation directory or in the WINNT directory tree on the active partition - so they install and run smoothly.

I will call Canon again tomorrow and try to get someone that is more helpful.

Try turning the scanner ON, letting it go through it's "warmup" procedure(If any - takes mine about 30") then re-booting. My machine NEVER knows the scanner exists until I turn it on then re-boot(Or go to "Device Manager" - "right click" on "Computer" and click "scan for hardware changes".). I guess the "Twain" has no twack to wun on, otherwise?

Try it anyway......
